This is the sort of book I loved as a child – I can still recall picking up a copy of “Gods, Graves, and Scholars” by the pseudonymous C.W. Ceram during a bookmobile visit to my school when I was about 10. I was captivated by the stories of the big archaeological finds of the past century – of Chichen Itza,of Howard Carter and Lord Canarvon’s excellent adventure in the Valley of the Kings and the discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb, of Heinrich Schliemann’s discovery of ancient Troy and of the Minoan labyrinth discovered on Crete which housed the Minotaur – yikes! This was stuff to conjure with, and was the reason that I went on to study anthropology in college. Life took me down another path, but I still love to read about these sorts of adventures – and to look on from afar at the discoveries of scientists and fortune hunters alike as they unearth the treasures of antiquity.

“Ancient Treasures” covers such topics as the Roman,Viking and Anglo-Saxon hoards buried in the English countryside which farm workers are unearthing with greater frequency now that metal detectors are in common use (leaving one to ponder the nature of the calamities which left such wealth unclaimed),the Spanish treasure fleets sunk off the coasts of the Americas carrying the wealth of the Aztec and Mayan Empires back to Spain, and the gorgeous Amber Room, an entire chamber made of the red-gold gemstone and given as a peace offering to Peter the Great of Russia by the Prussians in 1716, only to have it stolen by the Nazis in 1941 and never seen intact again (although fragments of its paneling occasionally appear on the black market).

“Ancient Treasures” is a book filled with what Howard Carter saw when he first breached the sealed doors of Tutankhamun’s tomb – “Wonderful things!”

  2. Thanks very much, I’m pleased Ancient Treasures brings back such pleasant memories.
